February favorites

February has been a very mixed month for me when it comes to makeup products, and unfortunately I've felt quite underwhelmed by a lot of the new products I have tried. This has meant that I've turned to some old tried, tested and well loved favorites to restore the balance. One of the new products that I've recently tested and really taken to is the Orly Bonder Rubberized Basecoat (£8.70). Let's just  disregard the somewhat strange name right away and go straight to the excellent qualities of this basecoat. The formula contains ingredients that make the basecoat feel ever so slightly sticky, and rubbery which means that nail polishes will get a better grip and last longer on your nails. When I use this basecoat nail polishes will last approximately 2-3 days longer than they normally would so e.g. a Barry M nail polish, usually lasting 3 days now stretches to 5 before the chipping is substantial. It is more expensive than many decent basecoats on the high street, however the bottle is a generous size and considering you don't need to apply nail polish as often any more, it's well worth getting. I'm so excited about this basecoat - yes I know... it is only a basecoat, BUT I'm beginning to hope that this is the solution to my unsatisfactory relationship with Chanel polishes which on my nails always chip already after a few hrs. I'll take it for a Chanel specific test drive and let you know how it went.

The fragrance that I've been wearing the most this month, is the gorgeous DKNY Energizing Fall EdT (£42). I've been feeling a bit cold and miserable after all the rain and the time spent outdoors and this has been perfect to restore my mood. It's an unusual but well balanced EdT with it's warming spicy and fruity scent of mandarin, lemon, jasmine, magnolia, musk, vetiver and cardamom. The blend is so harmonious, calming and beautiful with lots of substance and I'm suprised that I haven't seen it on more perfume shelves of department stores.
A completely new discovery for me this month, and already a firm favorite is Batiste's Dry Conditioner (£3.99). It's the same concept as with dry shampoo, you basically spray it onto dry hair and then brush and style as usual but instead of cleansing your hair, this conditioning spray adds nourishment which makes the hair smooth shiny and sleek. It's an amazing product that adds a lot of volume, freshness and control without the crispiness of a hair spray. I'm completely addicted to it and start using it already the day after a hair wash and I'm definitely trying the one for strength and shine next.

One of the must have products in any decent makeup collection is a perfect nude lipstick, something which I had been trying to find for aaaages. After much searching and swatching I eventually found one in L'Oréal's Color Riche Collection Privée (£8.19), more specifically in the shade Julianne Moore. It's a gorgeous peach color with just enough pink for a subtle and natural look, and since I've already reviewed it in more detail in my article about natural colors for makeup where you can also see a swatch, I'll only mention here that the formula is moisturising and pleasant to wear, and it fades well throughout the day. I've worn this shade so often since I bought it, not just on a "no makeup" day and although it took me a while to find a pale shade that I'm confident in wearing, I've finally got it now and it was well worth the wait.

Since I've spent so much time outdoors in February I haven't really felt like getting all glammed up in my best YSL Youth Liberator Serum foundation, so after a bit of digging around in my tash I've rediscovered the No 7 Instant Radiance Foundation (£12.50). It's perfect for those days when you're feeling a bit tired and your skin is stressed, and it'll give a light to medium coverage as well as a natural finish. The formula is lovely and silky with light reflecting particles that makes the skin look radiant but without any glitter or shimmer, and it feels great and soothing on tired or dry skin. The foundation is a little bit more expensive than many other great options from e.g. Bourjois or L'Oréal, but the No 7 Match Made Service makes it worth those extra few pounds since you're guaranteed to get as close a match with your natural skin tone as you can get.
I debated with myself if I should include this last beauty product that I've loved this month, but in the end I decided to put it out there. As you may remember I did a review of the Diorblush from the  Trianon collection earlier this month, which was a bit of a let down simply because of the weak pigmentation, which is why I decided to show this bargain blusher, MUA 1D Cheek Tint in Coral Cutie. Expensive doesn't always equal great quality! It's a lovely soft and creamy cheek tint in a stick form, which is easy to apply and blend in and it stays in place all day long. Dab a little of this beautiful sunny coral shade on your cheeks and blend for a fresh and healthy looking glowing skin. This was a limited edition MUA product which I bought in Superdrug last year for no more than a few pounds, but since it's now only available on ebay these days the price is hugely inflated, as so often happens although you should be able to get one for around £5-6, and it's definitely worth it.

I don't usually include non beauty items among my monthly favourites, but since it was a bit thin on the beauty ground this month for me, I thought I would show you a scarf I've been wearing at least a few times a week since I got it for Christmas. It's a two toned reversible cashmere scarf from LK Bennett - one of the sides and the tassels are in a gorgeous warm cerulean blue, and when you turn it over the other side is in a cool steel blue. It's long enough to double fold it and it's lovely and wide to use as a cashmere throw or stola. I hope you've had more luck than I with new products this monthly, and I'd love to know if you've also got any non beauty products among your February favorites?

What's in my workbag

I've never been a girl scout but somehow I still seem to stick to the motto: Be Prepared, since every time I leave the house it feels like I've brought everything with me that I could possibly need but the kitchen sink. I've even been known to take a spare pair of tights with me to work, just in case you get a pesky ladder, and for me that would just ruin an entire outfit - even if it had been all Chanel! At the same time I absolutely hate lugging big heavy bags around, so I try to keep things at a minimum and for work I think I've got it narrowed down to the bare necessities these days so that my City bag from Zara isn't completely overloaded. It's a wonderful bag with two big compartments and side pockets, a detachable shoulder strap and it's just the right size to fit in everything you need, without having to compromise on style too much. The office bag is a sleek and affordable everyday option that can stand some wear and tear and I absolutely love it and it's served me well, traveling all over the place. Now let's get the boring practical bits out of the way first; I'll of course not leave home without my Blackberry, my Mulberry purse, keys and the all important laptop.

Come rain or come shine I also always bring with me my Gucci sunglasses since I have a habit of using them as a hair accessory, to keep my hair out of my face when I'm not wearing it up. In these electronic times I know I'm going to sound really old fashioned, but I like to have a diary or an organiser that I can easily take with me wherever I go, to write my little lists of things to do or buy and manage my blog schedule and content. There's no better place to go for stationary than Paperchase, where I got this 2014 Diary, and as I am in fact a magpie I use a beautiful amethyst colored Swarovski Crystalline pen for the besquillion notes that I make every single day.

Now, on to the beauty products. There are a few things that I never leave the house without, and you'd find a similar set of products in different varieties in any bag that I carry with me on a particular day. The first product of my every day staple items is the Caudalie Beauty Elixir, which is such a lovely aromatic facial spray and just brilliant for refreshing your skin and adding hydration a couple of times a day, to add radiance or to give yourself a three second mini spa treatment to boost your mood when you hit one of those afternoon energy slumps. Next is an Anti Bacterial Gel Pocket from Bath & Body Works and this particular one is in the scent Tuscan Vineyard which is a lovely scent of deep red cherries, fresh mango and dry soft woods. I don't know about you but when my hands feel fresh and protected, I always feel energized and refreshed and these pocket gels are an easy way to quickly freshen up, particularly when your're out and about in crowded, public places e.g. train stations, the tube or airports. I'm completely addicted to these little goodies from Bath & Body Works and have one in every handbag, and here in the UK you can easily find a flavor to your liking either on eBay, or from Bath and Body Shop.

Even though I do use primers and makeup setting spray every day, before applying the best foundation ever (YSL Forever Youth Liberator Foundation) I do still bring with me powder to work for any emergency oil control since there's nothing worse than doing presentations or important meetings, worrying about a shiny forehead. Truth be told I don't use a lot of powder and I wouldn't spend a fortune on it either, and when you can get an amazing and affordable product like Soap & Glory's One Heck of a Blot, there's really no need. It's a great finely milled powder that blots where needed, that feels light on the skin and that doesn't settle into any creases or fine lines - it's a super little product and it's made me try more from Soap & Glory's lovely makeup range.

Talking about about makeup, I don't actually bring a lot of products with me to work and I'm happy with two products - first of all a mascara, and at the moment one of my favorites is the L'Oréal False Lash Flutter Mascara, affectionately known as the Butterfly effect mascara which is AMAZING at lengthening, volumizing AND fanning out the lashes for a rich and dramatic effect. If you wear a very natural look but still want to emphasize your eyes, this mascara is the one to use since it'll quickly create a stand out look with incredible lashes.
The second product is something for the lips and my absolute favorite lip product for work is the YSL Glossy Lip Stain in Shade 12 Pink Coral. It has a beautiful long lasting satin finish at the same time as it moisturizes the lips and you'll easily go about 4 hrs without having to retouch your lips. Pink Coral is a lovely natural rose shade which give lots of color without being over powering or distracting, which is always a good look for work, at least if you're in a corporate or traditional office environment.

Last among my daily staple items is a perfume of some sort, which I'll probably spray on a couple of times a day at least, and this particular day I was wearing the Caudalie Figue de Vigne Eau Fraiche which is a beautiful earthy and harmonious scent of juicy ripe figs mixed with sparkling bergamot and green grassy wood aromas. It's a very pure, subtle, soft and aromatic scent, but it still has a lot of character, individualism and body and wearing it makes me feel very confident and relaxed, just what you need for work.

That's what's in my daily work survival kit - except for the laptop my survival kit doesn't actually differ that much from what I'd carry with me in a smaller (or bigger) handbag at the weekend. What do you have in you work bag?

Ever ours? Ever MINE!

Regardless of the season or what I wear  I'm rarely seen without a chunky piece of statement jewellery - preferably a nice ring or a necklace, and my philosophy is that you can never have too many of either. I've been a big fan of statement pieces since well before it became so trendy and now fortunately, or unfortunately for my bank balance, it's very easy to find stand out pieces on the high street or online. I always know that I won't walk away empty handed and that I'll find great jewellery in ASOS, Zara or New Look, but now I've added another bookmark to my long list of trusted treasures chests on the internet - the online store Ever Ours.
Ever Ours has been around for a few years and sells both clothes and accessories, although for me it's the jewellery range that impresses the most - more specifically the necklaces that remind me of considerably more expensive brands like J.Crew and Baublebar and when the whole range is priced between £4-6 I'm like a kid in a candy store, not quite knowing where to start picking. The current range has a mix of styles from over the top sparkly to tribal inspired torque or bib necklaces and I bought a little bit of everything and I've also already some ideas of what to do with this loot.

I think I'll wear the blue floral necklace with a burnt orange top and skinny white jeans, the pastel necklace with a romantic lace top or dress and some gladiator sandals, the tribal bib with a classic monochrome look and the purple necklace with a sunny yellow jumper and a tan leather skirt - what do you think? If you'd like to see any of the necklaces in an outfit of the day post, please let me know which necklace I should wear in the comments below.

Purple floral necklace (£4) - no longer available, but similar here

Ever Ours ships worldwide and if you're in the UK, the delivery is super fast e.g. I usually get my items no later than within a day or two max. If you're looking for a statement necklace and you haven't heard of Ever Ours before, you should definitely pay them a visit. Ever Ours? - no chance, I'll fight you for it - it's all ever MINE!!!
